At the start of 2020, we were all armed with our new year’s resolutions and ready to make it the best year yet. Never did we expect that, by March, the country would be on lockdown and only allowed to go out for essential shopping or daily exercise.
During these unprecedented times, many of us have had to quickly adapt to remote working – cramming work laptops, computer screens and printers onto the kitchen table, or converting the spare bedroom into a home office. And, with the addition of more electrical devices, you’re sure to notice a significant increase in your electricity bill! But that’s not the only problem. You’ll most likely need somewhere to house even more cables.
The good news is, Flex-It has the perfect solution for keeping your home (and the extra cables) tidy – preventing trip hazards. Flexible conduits are especially helpful in making the installation of electrical cables easier and less expensive. And, depending on the type, they can also protect wiring against fire and water damage.
Here we look at some of the key reasons why you should consider flexible conduit systems if you haven’t already:
Flexible conduits, such as PVC covered steel conduits, are best for wet environments as they prevent water, oil and dirt from getting in – something that could affect their performance. They are wrapped in PVC which, doesn’t restrict the flexibility of the conduit yet, protects the metal against rusting and, therefore, prolongs lifespan.
Due to lockdown, you’ve probably binge-watched your favourite shows and exhausted Netflix. But, if you’re working from home, you’ll be spending 8 hours (if not more) on your computer. This can put a lot of pressure on your electrical sockets and increases the risk of overheating or, even worse, fires. Luckily for you, there are many flexible conduits – both metallic and non-metallic – on the market that are resistant to fire and heat.
Although there are many types of cable conduits out there, few offer more stability than the flexible conduit systems we supply, here at Flex-It. The main reason for this is that the compressed material is spiralled which makes it stronger and more flexible. Our PVC spiral reinforced range is an excellent choice for most applications – guaranteeing durability and flexibility. In fact, these are stable enough not to clutter your home or cause accidents but can also be used for tricky installations.
Unlike other conduits, flexible conduits are smooth on the inside and out. Feeding wires through a rigid conduit and arranging and adjusting them isn’t easy. However, the flexible-type facilitate easy insertion. This means that, once you’ve inserted cables, you’ll know exactly what leads where. So, if you need to unplug anything (i.e. when it’s time to return to work) you can do so with ease.
One of the biggest benefits of using flexible conduits is that they look great. Conduits, like these, not only encase your cables and keep them tidy, they allow you to conceal them to ensure they don’t spoil your interior décor. Here at Flex-it, we supply conduits in an assortment of colours, sizes and styles, so you should have no issue finding the perfect match for your needs.

How do I choose the best flexible conduits for my project?
When choosing the best conduits for your project, there are a few things you can do to help you make your selection:
• Do your research
Consider the environment where you’ll be routing your cables and choose your cables appropriately.
Look at their different properties – like how much heat they can withstand, if they’re corrosion resistant, etc. – to determine how well they’d hold up.
For example, let’s say you need a conduit system for a wastewater treatment facility. Non-metallic conduits, like our PVC spiral-reinforced conduits, will be ideal in this environment as they won’t corrode when they come into contact with water. And they’re just as strong as their metallic counterparts, meaning you can expect the exact same level of protection.
• Choose between metallic and non-metallic
Of course, both non-metallic and metallic flexible conduits each have different properties that are better suited to some environments than others.
Metallic conduits offer much better compression resistance than non-metallic, and will protect your wires from various cuts and punctures.
Non-metallic conduits, on the other hand, are great for indoor and outdoor domestic wiring projects – like simple cable tidy-ups – that aren’t too demanding.
Are flexible conduits expensive?
All flexible conduits are relatively affordable, but the price you’ll pay for flexible conduits depends on the type you choose (metallic, non-metallic, etc.) as well as the length you need.
Here at Flex It, we’re proud to be able to offer some of the most affordable prices for flexible conduits. But this doesn’t mean that we make any compromises to the standard of our products, and all of the conduits we supply are of the highest quality.
So, whenever you shop with us, you can be confident you’re getting the best value for your money!
