For many women, owning a designer handbag is a dream. It’s a way to make a statement, show your personality, and strut your stuff confidently. But with high price tags (sometimes thousands of dollars), affording a designer handbag feels out of reach for most women.
That’s where consignment stores come in. Buying preowned bags on consignment means your favorite high-quality, luxurious designer bags are available at a more affordable price point.
If you’re trying to decide on a designer handbag to invest in, you might consider looking to our “big six” in designer handbag brands: Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Fendi, Coach, and Kate Spade. I created this list because these brands vary in price point and style, so you can better tailor your handbag purchase to something that fits you. Let’s go through a rundown of these top contenders to help you start your search for buying designer handbags on consignment.
Louis Vuitton is one of the world’s most well-known and respected designer handbag brands. Founded in 1854 by Louis Vuitton, this French luxury fashion house is most known for its iconic LV monogram prints and sleek, sophisticated handbags.
From the classic Speedy bag to the modern Petite Malle to the spacious Neverfull tote, there are so many stunning styles to choose from.
If you’re not a fan of their well-known LV monogram print, they offer plenty of other colors and patterns as well, like the gorgeous Damier checkerboard pattern.
Louis Vuitton is considered a high-value investment brand because they use supple leather, quality hardware, and impeccable craftsmanship. It’s this artistry that makes Louis Vuitton one of the most coveted handbags in the world.
A traditional Louis Vuitton handbag can range from a few hundred dollars for a smaller style to several thousand dollars for large and elaborate bags. The preloved Louis Vuitton bags and clothing at Current Boutique are usually hundreds of dollars off their original price, so you can get a quality Louis without the steep price tag.
Another luxury brand with a long history, Chanel is known for their iconic, elegant designs that never go out of style. Chanel was founded in 1909 by the beloved Coco Chanel, and it has continued to be the epitome of timeless femininity in the fashion world.
Millions of women long for a Chanel bag. It’s a dream handbag for many of us! That’s because Chanel handbags are made with the finest luxury materials and impeccable attention to detail.
The quilted leather flap bag is one of the most renowned handbags of all time. The diamond-quilted leather is hand-stitched, and the illustrious CC-logo closure is a status symbol of the brand’s luxury and heritage.
Chanel is far from a one-hit wonder, though. There is a Chanel handbag to suit a range of tastes for any woman in the Chanel lifestyle. For example, the Boy Bag, named after Coco Chanel’s lifelong companion Boy Capel, is a modern yet old-world style with a cult-like following.
The Chanel Wallet on Chain is one of their popular small leather goods that is as beautiful as it is versatile – wear it as a crossbody, wallet, or small handbag.
And the Chanel 2.55 is an ageless shoulder bag that pays homage to the OG version designed by Coco herself back in February 1955.
Chanel handbags tend to be several thousands of dollars, and they can be hard to get your hands on. Walking into a Chanel shop is like walking into another world, and many Chanel styles require years-long waiting lists. That’s why so many Current Boutique customers flock to our Chanel section. We sell authentic Chanel pieces like clothes, shoes, and fine jewelry at a fraction of their original price – and the handbags usually sell out very quickly!
Gucci is an Italian fashion house known for its eclectic aesthetic and exceptional quality. Founded in 1921 by Guccio Gucci (yes, that was his real name), Gucci soon became the epitome of luxury. The Gucci brand has a particularly long and storied history with a strong sense of heritage. This is reflected in their commitment to traditional craftsmanship techniques and nods to their origins as an equestrian leather goods brand.
You’re sure to make a statement with a Gucci bag or accessory. Gucci is known for its innovative and bold design, like the green and red stripe, the tiger head, and the bee and snake motifs.
The GG Marmot, a quilted leather shoulder bag with the GG logo, is a popular choice if you’re looking for a classic, go-to design.
The Dionysus is an elegant yet edgy structured shoulder bag with the Gucci signature tiger-head hardware.
I’m a fan of the more modern Sylvie bag. This classic white leather and gold buckle hardware pairs with almost any outfit, but the signature Gucci stripe makes a unique and status-worthy appearance.
What I love about Gucci is that it has that old-world feel with a modern aesthetic. It’s often hard to tell when a Gucci style was released because each unique design remains ageless. Check out the Gucci clothes and accessories we have at Current Boutique here.
No handbag list is complete without Coach. Coach is generally a more budget-friendly option than the last three, but it’s still a high-luxury brand with quality designs. Founded in 1941 by Miles and Lillian Cahn, Coach is an American luxury fashion house known for its signature C monogram.
What makes Coach so unique is that it isn’t afraid to adapt its styles to the times. They have classic go-to bags, but they’ve also shifted towards more modern and sleek offerings.
The Coach Swagger is a structured shoulder bag with a signature turn-lock closure, a stunning option for women with refined taste.
The Rogue is a spacious tote with Coach’s signature horse and carriage emblem, and it comes in a variety of colors and patterns to suit your unique style.
I love the Charlie, a small crossbody with a vintage aesthetic that’s still chic and fresh.
Our Coach section is one of my favorites in the store because our discounted preloved pieces mean that we can offer high-quality, high-fashion at a budget-friendly price.
Kate Spade handbags are known for their cute and fun designs. They are as playful as they are elegant. Founded in 1993 by designer Kate Spade, this is the newest brand on our list. Kate Spade handbags are known for their attention to detail, durability, and longevity.
Kate Spade is instantly recognizable thanks to their distinctive hardware, signature spade logo, and spirited sense of style.
Kate Spade offers a wide array of popular bags, like the staple Sam bag, a classic bag with a clean, rectangular shape and spacious interior.
The Cameron Street Lane is a chic and sophisticated crossbody/hand-bag with a structured silhouette that’s endlessly versatile for work and play.
It’s hard to list all the popular styles of Kate Spade bags because there are so many! Kate Spade has a wide array of handbags, jewelry, and clothing, so you’re sure to find something special that speaks to you somewhere on our racks at Current Boutique.
Fendi purses are some of the most coveted handbags in the world, thanks to their elevated craftsmanship and stunning designs. Fendi is particularly well-known for their textured leathers, bold colors, distinctive embellishments, and their prestigious double F logo.
If you love the baguette bag as much as we do, thank Fendi! Silvia Venturini Fendi designed the baguette in 1997, wanting a compact purse to fit comfortably under the arm the same way the French carry their daily bread. That's right - it doesn't mean "little bag." The name actually does from from the French baguette bread!
The Peekaboo is another of Fendi's iconic designs. Its soft front panel, twist-lock hardware, and unique silhouette make it a favorite among fashionistas.
If you adore Fendi like we do, check out our preloved Fendi bags, shoes, and clothes for a fraction of their original ticket price. You can never go wrong with the impeccable quality and stunning look of a Fendi bag.
The high price tag of a designer handbag can make these brands feel out of reach, but buying preloved designer handbags means you can find high-quality luxury bags at a more affordable price point. Not only are you saving money when you buy on consignment, but you’re also reducing your environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable fashion industry by limiting the demand for new, resource-intensive designer goods.
Find these brands and so many more by browsing our bags section at Current Boutique!

Whether you grew up longing for a Louis Vuitton Speedy or have forever idolized Gucci and Chanel, the best luxury purse brands never fail in the arm candy department. Although the investment can be steep, the bestselling designer purses from the most iconic labels carry their value over time, meaning you own a piece of history. Additionally, there is plenty of data to help you decide how to shop for a designer handbag and if the item you’re eyeing is actually worth the investment.
For instance, look at The RealReal’s 2023 Luxury Consignment Report. While the higher end of luxury is and will always be a booming business, according to The RealReal’s report, shopping for or trading in designer bags looks a little different this year. “Instead of investing in ultra-luxury classics, many consumers are looking for more affordable, trendier styles from Bottega Veneta, Prada, Miu Miu, Dior, Burberry, and Valentino Garavani,” the report states. But not only is the aspirational ‘It’ bag shifting downmarket, but also fair condition bags are on the rise. “Cost-conscious shoppers are gravitating toward fair condition, ‘gateway bags,’ which allow more people to enjoy luxury fashion on their own terms,” the report says.
While some may be hesitant to shop this way, Noelle Sciacca, senior lead at The RealReal, says, “We [The RealReal] strive to provide full transparency to help our fair condition shoppers make the most informed decisions. In addition to identifying the condition tier, we describe each imperfection in the product notes and highlight the flaws in the images provided so that consumers can decide what may be a dealbreaker for themselves.”
With shopping behaviors changing and new brands arising, there are many things to consider when determining what designer handbag deserves a place in your wardrobe in 2024. That’s why we tapped industry experts, including Google’s head of editorial and creative Aya Kanai, to edit down the best and latest editions from top labels and highlight what makes designer bags worth purchasing.
Keep reading for the best designer handbags, whether that be everyday designer satchel handbags, designer crossbody bags and designer shoulder bags, or special-occasion clutches and vacation totes. Plus, find care and storage tips to keep your most treasured totes, satchels, carryalls, and clutches in pristine condition.

While Gucci opened its doors in 1921, it wasn’t till the late ’40s that the Italian fashion house’s popularity skyrocketed thanks to its famed bamboo-handle bag launch. The innovative design caught the attention of Hollywood icons, and, as a result, Ingrid Bergman soon carried a version of it in the 1954 film Viaggio in Italia. This appearance arguably sparked a passion for Gucci and its luxury bags, creating a ripple effect that has lasted generations.
Today, a Gucci bag is among the most popular designer purses, from timeless leather styles to instantly recognizable logo-emblazoned versions. Heritage details are a hallmark of the brand, like the horsebit hardware, which adorns not only the label’s bags but also its shoes, small leather goods, and even clothing.

Since Prada’s launch in 1913, premium leather handbags have been at the forefront of its success. Regardless of the style — classic, ruched, printed, or studded — the leather the brand uses is of the highest quality calf leather that’s rich and smooth. Because Prada is so well-versed in everything from coveted totes to on-trend minis, the brand brings back silhouettes from years past in its contemporary collections.
For example, its Re-Edition Nylon style is a blast from the past, and just about every celebrity, influencer, and fashion lover has their hands on it. It’s beloved for its practicality and nostalgic feel. If you’re hard on your everyday bag or prefer a durable design with a designer logo, this Prada iteration is a great purchase and comes in many colorways. There are also dressier iterations like the Prada Cleo bag, which is offered in two sizes — small and large — and has a round silhouette made of brushed calfskin leather, giving it a shiny finish, perfect for a night out with girlfriends. For a formal option, Prada’s re-release of its Brushed Leather Handbag from 1995 is street style’s most coveted bag. Models carried it in the spring 2023 show, and it has already become the shape of the season for everything from the office to brunch.

Since 1945, Celine has been known for its quiet luxury handbags. In 2008, when Pheobe Philo took over as the creative director, the brand became the stylish alternative to more mainstream, flashier labels. During this time, Celine released many of its iconic handbag designs, now in high demand as carryover designs or as second-hand finds. While the brand creates more than just handbags, its bags are luxurious, minimalistic, and perfectly embody effortless Parisian style. From the exquisite construction to the versatility of the designs, there’s much to love about Celine’s bags.
Whether you typically lean toward timeless, minimal bags or are seeking a new designer silhouette for mastering the Y2K trend, you can’t go wrong with a bag by Celine. The classic crossbody with its flap and sleek clasp and the trapeze-shaped luggage tote are among the luxury French label’s bestsellers; other designs like the Ava bag and the Triomphe shoulder bag are two recent hits buzzing amid celebrities like Kaia Gerber. Hermès was born in 1837 when Thierry Hermès founded a harness workshop in Paris. The company’s mission was to create equestrian leather goods for European nobles. In 1900, Hermès introduced its first bag to consumers: the Haut à Courroies (aka the HAC). This bag was designed specifically to carry riders’ saddles. In the 1920s, Hermès grew to include accessories, clothing, handbags, and travel bags. In 1935, the Kelly was introduced, followed by the Constance in 1959, and the Birkin in 1984.
Since the beginning, Hermès has possessed an unwavering commitment to quality, and their leather goods are still handmade in France by skilled artisans using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations. Once a piece is completed, it undergoes a rigorous quality control process before being shipped to its final destination. This attention to detail ensures that every Hermes product lives up to the high standards set by the brand, making it truly unique and special.
While A-list shoppers like Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Moss, Olivia Palermo, Kourtney Kardashian, and Lady Gaga look to invest in Hermes’ handbags for their timeless and durable construction, they also look to invest in the brand’s history since it adds to the bag’s value.

Since 1910, Chanel has become a prominent name in fashion. It started when Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel started selling hats. After launching the signature Chanel No. 5 perfume and ‘little black dress,’ Coco Chanel moved on to design the first Chanel bag in 1929. However, the current versions of Chanel bags that we know and love today were not released until 1955. Inspired by straps on the bags carried by soldiers, Coco Chanel introduced metal straps to her bags which became a design revolution as shoulder bags were frowned upon by women of status. This first bag was called the Chanel 2.55 bag (2 for February and 55 for the year 1955). It was discontinued in the 1970s but relaunched in 2005 by Karl Lagerfeld and named the Chanel Reissue bag.
Since the beginning, Chanel has highly valued functionality and practicality in its handbags. Drawing inspiration from her experiences, Coco Chanel integrated aspects of her life into her designs. For example, the inner flap in Chanel’s original Double Flap bag was designed to give privacy to women when they retrieve contents in their handbags. Additionally, many Chanel bags had burgundy interiors intended to serve as a contrasting background, allowing women to locate their things easily in the bag. Furthermore, the turnlock used in her 2.55 flap bag was termed a Mademoiselle lock, referencing that Coco Chanel was never married.
Today’s Chanel bags are just as unique and feature key elements that speak to original Chanel designs. While the brand’s vintage designer handbags are still highly sought-after, demand is higher than supply which has allowed Chanel to boost the prices of its most coveted offerings.
So if you’ve been keeping your eye on Chanel with the intention of purchasing a Chanel handbag, ensure your choice is wise. Sciacca says to get your hands on “the Chanel Mini Flap bag because it’s timeless and one of the few styles that consistently transcends demographics. Plus, it has a high resale and retention value and never goes out of fashion.”

Dior handbags have had a long history of success. Their popularity can be traced back to Marc Bohan, the second designer to take the helm of the fashion house following Monsieur Dior. Bohan created the Oblique monogram, in which the four letters of Dior appear tossed together at an italic tilt and then stacked upon each other repeatedly until they form a diagonal line. Since then, Dior’s bags have eternalized elegance and have been mainstays in many celebrity closets. Princess Diana, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Paris Hilton are a few of the many celebrities who have worn the labels brands, including the renowned Lady Dior Bag and Saddle Bag.
While many of Dior’s bags still include the brand’s signature maximalist motif, its purses are safe investments because the designs are versatile for styling. So whether you looking for a go-to evening bag to match your little black dress or a luxury tote bag for your air travels, Dior has a bag for you.

Since 1925, Fendi has dazzled the style set, creating captivating and cutting-edge accessories and handbags with its signature double “F” motif. However, Karl Lagerfeld brought the brand to the masses. As Fendi’s creative director, Lagerfeld helped solidify the brand’s legacy, propelling the fashion house to stardom. Then in the 1990s, Fendi’s Baguette bag was introduced, which started a revolution in handbags for the fashion house. The simple, chic bag would later be worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City and become an iconic piece of fashion history. Today, Fendi remains a byword for luxury, with its audacious bags leading the way.
From the small and large Peekaboos to the baguette and more, Fendi bags have a cult following, and it’s not hard to see why. Goyard was founded in 1853 in Paris, making it the oldest leather goods maker still in business. In 1998, Jean-Michel Signoles purchased Goyard from the family, expanded its workshops in France and opened new retail locations in North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. Signoles also introduced new colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, sky blue, navy blue, burgundy, white, and gray. Goyard hand-painted its signature Goyardine until the early 2000s when it migrated to mechanical screen printing; however, personalizations are still hand-painted by Goyard artisans. The signature interlocking Ys and dots are a symbol of the family history as log-drivers and the Y in Goyard.
Goyard has many product categories, but its handbags can’t be missed. The Saint Louis Goyard tote is the most popular style because it’s made from a coated canvas, printed with the Goyardine pattern, and then trimmed with leather for a luxurious finish. Plus, it has ample room to store necessities whether you’re traveling or heading to the office.
Goyard only sells items in retail locations and does not sell any products online; however, you can buy secondhand styles from sites like The RealReal, Fashionphile, and Rebag.

Louis Vuitton has always been one of the longest-standing luxury handbag brands. However, the brand didn’t start with everyday bags; instead, it created sturdy travel pieces — which shoppers still search for on Google, according to Kanai.
Quickly, Vuitton became well respected for his craft and opened a shop in Paris. After years of success, Vuitton began experimenting with his luggage designs and eventually expanded his range to include a dome-shaped handbag created specifically for Gabrielle Chanel. This was the first time a Vuitton bag was created for personal use rather than travel. However, it wasn’t until 1934 that Chanel allowed the brand to mass-produce the bag for the general public. It was redesigned to be more compact and streamlined for everyday use and dubbed the Squire until it was renamed the Alma in 1955. With the success of its smaller goods, Louis Vuitton expanded its product line to include the Keepall in 1930, the Speedy in 1930, and the Noe in 1932. The demand for these bags was extraordinary, so much so that they are still currently made in a myriad of materials and sizes.
1997 was a pivotal year for Louis Vuitton: It was when the brand appointed Marc Jacobs as its first creative director. Marc Jacobs designed the brand’s first ready-to-wear line and introduced the Monogram Vernis range of handbags. Later, In 2001, Stephen Sprouse, with the help of Marc Jacobs, designed a collection of classic monogram canvas bags with neon graffiti written all over them. To this day, this is one of the most sought-after collections among serious Louis Vuitton collectors.
As Louis Vuitton continued to thrive, more changes were made, such as Marc Jacobs stepping down as creative director and bag styles coming and going. However, throughout explosive trends, Louis Vuitton bags have remained closet staples. The decadent designs are durable by nature and timelessly versatile promising to stay in fashion forever and style effortlessly with one’s already established wardrobe.

Maison Valentino was founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti. However, it wasn’t until 1962 that it became an Italian institution in the fashion and luxury sector. The brand quickly became known for its haute couture pieces, attracting the attention of women worldwide — most notably, Jackie Kennedy.
Today, the Valentino Garavani brand, backed by CEO Jacopo Venturini and sole Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli, continues to garner the attention of the fashion set for its Italian craftsmanship and cutting-edge designs that pay close attention to detail, quality, creativity, and the personal relationship between the customer and the company. The Italian house’s handbag ranges assortment from sleek shoulder bags, like Medium Rockstud, to the ultra-modern large and small Roman Stud quilted leather designs, all with a decided edginess. The large style is complete with a shoulder strap and top handle for versatile carrying, while the smaller version is more similar to a bucket bag. These come in vibrant colors like orange and hot pink, appealing to dynamic dressers and those willing to experiment with maximalism. While studded designs are unmistakably Valentino Garavani, the plaque-adorned versions, like the VLogo leather shoulder bags, are beloved by those who tend to be more classic with their handbags. This sleek style, offered in versatile shades like black and brown and bright and soft pastels, radiates Y2K-era minimalism, complete with a gleaming chainlink strap for added elegance. Then, there’s the small leather-trimmed raffia tote — a summer-perfect design to pair with breezy white dresses, swimwear, cut-off shorts, and tank tops.

Shaped by her mother’s appreciation for the natural world and her father’s musical career, Stella McCartney spent her childhood surrounded by eclectic inspirations. As a result, she set herself on a mission to create a brand with a British take on modern femininity and tailoring.
Since her first collection, which was shown in Paris in 2001, Stella McCartney has never used leather, feathers, skin, or fur. Instead, she uses innovative animal- and cruelty-free alternatives that look and feel luxurious and have an environmental impact up to 24 times lower than animal leathers. These sustainable materials can be seen through all its handbag designs, especially its iconic Falabella bag, which was seen as an act of rebellion when it launched in 2009. At the time, the usage of faux leather went against the belief that luxury bags must be made from genuine leather. Today, the timeless designs continue to push boundaries and evolve with Stella McCartney’s sustainable mission.

From the Puzzle Bag to the Gate Bag and now the Paseo Bag, Loewe’s handbags have solidified themselves as It bags on the arms of fashion tastemakers worldwide. But, above all else, Loewe bags uphold the brand’s dedication to its craft which can be seen through its unmatched quality leather.

Founded in 1996, Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury fashion house that prides itself on non-branded and refined ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, accessories, and jewelry. Advertising with the slogan, “When your own initials are enough,” the brand established itself as an understated treasure from an early start. The eighties were when Bottega first gained much recognition from famous artists and celebrities like Andy Warhol. It was also a time when the label looked to innovative techniques such as its Intrecciato Weave. To utilize delicate, supple leather effectively, the brand opted for this woven pattern in order to supply its handbags with durability. Intrecciato was chosen because it is the Italian word for “braided.”
In June 2018, Daniel Lee took over the creative directorship of Bottega Veneta and churned out It bag after It bag. While the brand now has Matthieu Blazy as its creative director, he‘s made his mark in a short amount of time. His debut fall 2022 collection was met with much fanfare.
While Blazy’s Sardine and Clicker handbags have already reached the elusive It bag status with their less-is-more approach, shoppers shouldn’t overlook other timeless, buzzy designs like the Cassette crossbody, Arco tote, and nostalgic-inspired Jodie, all of which feature larger woven leather panels and carry much street-style influence. These bags all have the perfect day-to-night functionality making them great for all needs.

Since the 1950s, the French luxury brand Chloé has been a go-to for chic, sophisticated, and wearable fashion. Chloé’s handbags reflect the label’s distinctive style DNA that keeps effortless designs at the forefront while emulating the mystique of youthfulness and femininity. The most notable year for the brand was 2001, when Phoebe Philo took the reins from Stella McCartney, and under her stewardship, the house ventured into leather goods. Philo dreamed up the Paddington bag — the brand’s first It bag that featured soft leather with a distinctive padlock. Not only was this bag rare, but it was highly coveted and spotted on the arms of stars like Nicky Hilton, Katy Perry, and Megan Fox. While this style was the first hit for Philo at Chloé, it wasn’t the last. With The Marcie, Nile, and many more to follow, Chloé became a luxury womenswear label with ’70s influences and a captivating spirit that young women gravitate towards, even today. Founded by Egyptian-born Parisienne Gaby Aghion, the romantic nature of Chloé’s vision lives on with designer Gabriela Hearst.

In 2013 Mansur Gavriel launched into the fashion scene to redefine luxury with a minimalist design approach. The label, founded by Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel, debuted with two simple and iconic silhouettes — a bucket and a simple tote bag — that were fresh additions to the contemporary price point arena. Their simple, chic luxury bags — devoid of excess hardware, pockets, or studs — filled a hole in the accessories market. It resolved the need for season-less pieces — rather than of-the-minute trends — that would age well.
From there, celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Margot Robbie, Sarah Jessica Parker, and more took notice. Today, Mansur Gavriel stays grounded in its history and outside the cyclical nature of fashion trends. It remains known for its anonymous elegance and bag interiors painted in striking complementary shades. While its price tag notably separates it from other designer brands, so does the fact that its bags are not looked at as just status symbols, and that’s exactly why consumers — new customers and longtime Mansur Gavriel devotees — gravitate toward the label.

When Latinx designer and Brooklyn native Raul Lopez left New York label Hood By Air in 2017, he was on a quest to launch his own brand, which became Luar — Raul spelled backward. However, it wasn’t until Luar’s spring/summer 2021 show during New York Fashion Week that the brand was put on the map. The star of the show that sent social media into a frenzy was Luar’s Ana bag.
Later in 2022, Luar took home the Accessories Designer of the Year award at the CFDA fashion awards and gained worldwide recognition for his innovative silhouettes, which include the celeb-loved Ana bag. This dynamic handbag, with its inimitable circular handle and angular shape, has been spotted on the likes of Dua Lipa and Julia Fox, and it’s only getting more attention. “We’ve already seen high demand and hundreds of obsessions for the few Luar Ana bags we’ve received, so I predict this style will become the breakout bag of the year,“ Sciaccio adds.

No matter what’s on your plate, there’s a 2024 handbag trend for you.
Bold and Colorful Designer Handbags: Bold, beaded, and bejeweled handbags are increasing in popularity due to the fact that people want to get dressed up again. “Right after the pandemic, we saw an increased demand for styles typically worn for going out and dressing up, and the trend is only picking up; think, a sequin Fendi baguette or an embellished mini Dior lady bag,” Sciacca says. “In Q4 2022, for example, demand for mini bags that sparkle — crystals, rhinestones, or glitter — jumped 76 percent compared to the prior year.” So get your hands on a party-ready accessory or dust off your statement-making bag and pair it with a cocktail dress for a wedding or straight-leg jeans, a blazer, and slingback pumps for dinner with the girls.
Seriously Structured Luxury Bags: Structured bags that mean business have been seen on the runways and the streets in form of “U” shapes and boxy silhouettes. “These bags had a big moment on the Spring 2023 runways, from storied brands like Prada and Miu Miu to newer names like Luar,” Sciacca says. Despite the brand or details, two things unify this trend — sturdy leather and structural shapes. These bags hold their own, with not a slouch in sight. They’re Ideal for slipping into a minimalist capsule wardrobe because their clean outline adds polish to any outfit.
Unique Designer Handbags: “Currently, crescent bags are the trend-forward popular options,” says Kanai. These bags are also known as half-moon bags and feature rounded edges, creating that crescent shape. They’re the perfect handbag for any minimalist and are mostly worn over the shoulder, fitting snugly under the arm and ensuring a sleek look. Sciacca agrees that the secondhand market is on the same path, with shoppers reaching for cylinder-shaped bags. “We’ve also seen an uptick in demand for cylinder-shaped bags like The Row’s 90 Handle Bag and Louis Vuitton’s Papillon BB. Search for cylinder bags is up 35 percent in the second half of 2022 compared to the first half,” Sciacca says. What designers and buyers love about this style is that it can be worn for day and night, making it a super versatile addition to one’s wardrobe. Choose one in a neutral, muted shade since it will go with everything.
Worn-in Designer Bags: The idea of something already possessing wear and tear or being pre-owned is a theme we’re seeing. At the spring 2023 shows, there was an onslaught of relaxed, distressed, and rugged leather totes, shoulder bags, and clutches at Givenchy, Miu Miu, and Saint Laurent. Later we saw the trend trickle into the fall 2023 shows, with brands like Jil Sander and MM6 Maison Margiela sending rugged, pre-scratched-up tote bags down the runways. Whether taken to work or to the airport, these worn-in bags ensure an effortlessly cool look for years to come.
Utilitarian-Inspired Luxury Handbags: If you want a practical bag, then the utilitarian-inspired handbag trend is for you. These bags were seen in abundance on the spring 2023 and fall 2023 runways, suggesting they will make a big splash sooner rather than later. While they are a flashback to the aughts, these new designs with pockets and buckles have a modern take that is slightly more refined and taps into the Gorpcore trend. “The Multipli-Cité style that Louis Vuitton brought back from the archives taps into the broader utility pocket trend seen on the spring 2023 runways at shows like Miu Miu and Altuzarra,” Sciacca says. “Fans have also spotted this Louis Vuttion style on influencer Emma Chamberlain, which can strongly contribute to the bag’s increased popularity.” So before they sell out, look for handbags with outer pockets or buckle details — either on the closure or the straps.
While designer handbags come in all shapes and sizes to suit every taste and lifestyle, some silhouettes are more popular than others. As of recently, “the top searched handbag style in the US is a tote bag, followed by crossbody bags and shoulder bags,” says Kanai. “While these styles are, of course, classic staples, we’re also seeing more search around belt bags and micro bags. Belt bags reached an all-time high in August of 2022, and Americans searched for micro bags more than ever before in January 2023,” she adds.
When it comes to timeless designer handbags searched on Google, Kanai points to Louis Vuitton’s travel bag as a high-end option and Baggu’s crescent bag as an entry-point purchase. These unique yet simple silhouettes are designed with durable textiles, making them desirable and easy to implement into one’s rotation.
As for the popular core classic styles on the secondhand market, Sciacca points to the Hermès Birkin or Kelly. “Both styles are great examples of luxury handbags that regularly sell for or above current retail prices. Looking at the Birkin 25, it sells for 186 percent of its original retail value, on average,” Sciacca says. “Additionally, the Chanel Mini Flap bag is timeless and one of the few styles that consistently transcends age demographics and never goes out of fashion.” For bags in the $1,000 to $5,000 range, Sciacca says you can’t go wrong with Louis Vuitton’s Monogram Neverfull, Christian Dior’s Book Tote, or Prada’s Tessuto Re-Edition 2005 Shoulder Bag.
As for new classic silhouettes worth investing in, Sciacca says crescent and half-moon-shaped bags are an excellent investment. “Looking at the second half of 2021 versus the same 2022 time period, we saw a 67 percent uptick in demand for the shape,” Sciacca tells WWD. “Newer versions with metal or wooden handles, a la the Bottega Veneta Sardine or Saint Laurent Mombasa, are great examples. Gucci also re-issued the Gucci Attache large shoulder bag, which we see strong demand for.” These styles are great for someone looking for bags with artisanal elements and heritage logos that will never tire.
A designer handbag requires special treatment when it comes to care and storage, so follow these guidelines to keep your bag in pristine condition.
